Article Abstract:
The US Navy is designing faster, lighter robots that neutralize improvised explosive devices as bomb disposal teams stay safely out of range. The service is increasing its purchases of existing robots for dispatch to Iraq and Afghanistan, which include expendable robots based on radio-controlled toy cars that are being developed as a cheap, rapid way to deliver an explosive countercharge to improvised explosive devices.

Congressional action encourages deepwater acceleration
Article Abstract:
The US House Appropriations Committee has approved an increase in the funding of the Coast Guard's Integrated Deepwater System program in the fiscal year 2004. The increased emphasis on the homeland security, in view of increased terrorist threats against the United States, has generated great interests in Congress for accelerating the timetable for the Deepwater System while saving several billion dollars.

2005 budget plan funds nine ships; outlook is for 17 new ships in 2009
Article Abstract:
The US Navy's proposed budget for fiscal year 2005 would purchase nine ships, and 17 ships for the year 2009 as new types of ships are launched and production of the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) is increase to six for the year 2009. The planned shipbuilding budget for 2009 is $20 billion, a $4 billion increase over the planned 2008 funding level.
