Salvaging the "Kursk"

The tragic sinking of the Russian nuclear submarines 'Kursk' in Aug 2000 not only killed 118 onboard, but created a major risk of radioactive contamination of the Barents Sea's shallow depths. An international consortium's plans to salvage the sub is analyzed.

The death of the crew of the Russian submarine Kursk is a tragedy that should serve as a warning of the need for vigilance. The cover-up of the incident does not reflect well on the Russian admirals, but it is understandable in the political situation.
