Spence leads fight for additional funding; HASC chairman cites "widespread shortfalls"
Article Abstract:
US President Clinton's defense spending request for fiscal year 2001 still does not go far enough to cover military requirements, said House Armed Services Committee Chairman Floyd Spence (R-SC). While the 2001 spending plan represents the first real growth in military spending in a decade, Spence said the proposed budget still suffers from serious mismatches between strategy, forces and resources. He added that declining military spending in the past several years has left the US military more strained to carry out its mission of protecting the global interests of the US.

Procurement accounts suffer despite increased funding for Iraq war operations
Article Abstract:
The funds in the financial year 2003 Iraq War Supplemental Budget that included $79 billion provided a scant $1.3 billion for war-related procurement of hardware, including tracked vehicles and rotary-wing aircraft. The temporary boost in spending from the wartime supplemental is not expected to correct the underfunding of the procurement accounts especially for ships and aircraft.
