State of insecurity: Sri Lanka and the war that lost its way
Article Abstract:
Sri Lanka continues to exist in a state of considerable in security that can be seen throughout the nation. The adverse economic impact of the civil war in the nation is apparent, and roughly 37% of the limited Sri Lankan budget will be spent on the war in 1999. There is, however, a general weariness exhibited by the citizenry with the civil war that is fast approaching boredom, and the first signs of a peace movement appear to be underway. Yet prospects for peace continue to be poor because of the government's refusal for third-party mediation and a widespread belief that there are individuals and businesses who have much to gain from the continuance of the Sri Lankan civil war.
