Article Abstract:
Direction des Constructions Navales (DCN) of France has risen to become Europe's largest naval contractor by virtue of the high technological quality of its products and the size of its shipyard facilities. DCN had a 1997 turnover of 13.2 billion French francs and employs 19,200 people. The shipbuilder's main customer is the French Navy, which accounted for 70% of DCN's business in 1997. The company, nonetheless, maintains a healthy export business to compensate for cuts in French defense spending. Efforts to secure business from export customers have resulted in new orders worth 8.9 billion French francs in 1997.
