The expeditionary FAO
Article Abstract:
The expeditionary foreign area officer (EFAO) should be focused on providing cultural and linguistic expertise to the combat commander in the field, with strategic and political billets and serving broader mission requirements. Focusing on developing skill sets that will directly serve the Marine air-ground task force (MAGTF) commander, the EFAO will try to reduce the varying degree of ignorance in preparation for combat deployment.

FAO revisited: Establish the criteria and provide the capability
Article Abstract:
The "Arabic speaking" Marine Corps foreign area officers (FAOs) are inadequate in understanding the dialects spoken in Iraq and lack expertise in Iraqi culture, chiefly due to the incompetent training they receive for their role. The FAO training should be modified through a clearly defined program to prepare them as effective support to commanders in the field, with adequate relevant language skills and cultural knowledge.
