The operations against Taliban and Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan changed the US Air Force's relationship with the Army. The battle revealed a deep operational rift between senior air and land force planners, a rift that both services have subsequently worked hard to repair. Moreover, the Air Force is taking a number of steps aimed at making its group of battlefield airmen a more effective force.

The $3 billion shave

The US Air Force's (USAF's) budget, despite receiving a healthy midyear boost, is nowhere close to meeting its financial need, as the 'must pay' operation and maintenance bills would exceed its newly expanded budget by a whopping $3 billion. The Air Force is trying to fill the gap by resorting to an austerity plan, which is outlined.

The United States Air Force's (USAF) plans to improve its intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities are described. The USAF wants to enhance the ISR capabilities in order to provide better and more timely battle damage assessment (BDA).
