The venerable M2 .50-caliber machine gun
Article Abstract:
The M2 .50-caliber machine gun has become one of the most respected weapon systems in the US Army because of its combat longevity and service record. First used by the Army in 1933, the weapon is a belt-fed, recoil-operated, air-cooled, crew-served gun that can be fired in single shot and automatic modes. The cyclic rate of fire in the automatic mode is 550 rounds a minute. The main mission of the M2 is to provide suppressive area fire against troop concentrations and lightly armed vehicles.

Objective individual combat weapon
Article Abstract:
Alliant Techsystems, heading an industry team, has been named contractor for the Army's objective individual combat weapon (OICW). The company will develop around seven more OICW systems that will be employed in user evaluations and other test activities to be made during fiscal year 1999. The OICW will mix the power of 20-mm air-bursting munitions, 5.56-mm NATO kinetic ammunition and a full-solution fire-control subsystem. The weapon is considered the next-generation infantry weapon that will take the place of certain M16A2, M4 and M203 weapon systems at the turn of the century.
