Turkey cancels major ongoing projects: An end and a new beginning

Article Abstract:

Turkey's top decision-making body on defense industrial procurement, the Defense Industry Executive Committee (DIEC) meeting on 14th May 2004 decided to cancel the existing tenders for the Attack Tactical Reconnaissance (ATAK) attack helicopter, Turkish Unmanned Air Vehicle (TUAV) and Modern MBT projects. The DIEC has also decided to give an opportunity to the local defense industry companies to be more active in their partnerships with foreign firms.

The role of Undersecratariat for Defence Industries (SSM) is to formulate and implement the necessary policies for the defense industry, and to centrally execute and coordinate all defense industrial activities at Turkey. The primary goals of SSM are to establish and develop a national defense industry that is open to both the private sector and technological developments and to utilize the existing defense industrial capabilities.
