UK begins work on future attack subs
Article Abstract:
The UK's Defense Procurement Agency is considering 10 different designs for its Future Attack Submarine (FASM) program. Seven of the design concepts are for nuclear-powered vessels and the other three are for conventionally-powered versions. The nuclear-powered concepts build on the existing PWR2 reactor and 'Core H,' which is designed to power the submarine for the entirety of its design life. FASM is designed to replace the Royal Navy's Trafalgar-class nuclear-powered attack submarines that are slated for decommissioning beginning 2010.

Endurance is shipshape for Antarctic duty
Article Abstract:
The HMS Endurance ice patrol ship of the UK Royal Navy will again be deployed for Antarctic missions after completing a BAMP (Base Assisted Maintenance Program). The seven-week program includes the replacement of trunking and pipework related to the vessel's high-volume air-conditioning system, and the installation of a new GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System). The effort was met with difficulty regarding the HMS Endurance's spares, since the ship was built by Ulstein Hatlow of Norway in 1991.
