UN security council resolution increases pressure on Syria
Article Abstract:
The United Nations (UN) Security Council has passed resolution 1559 declaring 'support for a free and fair electoral process in Lebanon's upcoming presidential election, conducted according to Lebanese constitutional rules. The resolution, adopted by a margin of nine votes in favor and six abstentions, was supposedly brought on by Syria's endorsement of a constitutional amendment to allow an extension of Lebanese President Emile Lahoud's term in office.

Khalil assassination sours relations with Jordan

The Syrian and Palestinian sources are alleging the Jordanian involvement in the assassination of the Hamas militant Izz al-Din al-Sheikh Khalil on 26 September 2004 in Damascus, even though it is claimed by Israel. Various events surrounding the assassination and the recent exodus of high-ranking militants from Syria are investigated.
