The active US Army deployed more than 20,000 soldiers to the Gulf Coast area in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, joining more than 50,000 soldiers from the National Guard in the relief effort. The Army's emphasis was contributing on flexibility, rapid planning and decision making under trying circumstances.

The capture of the former president of Iraq near Tikrit by the Crazy Horse Troop of the U.S. Army is discussed. The 500-mile self-deployment convoy operation in Iraq took the Crazy Horse Troop scouts from a staging area of Kuwait to its temporary headquarters at Forward Operating Base Pacesetter.

The U.S. Army provided reinforcements to firefighters in helping to control fires in the Northern Rocky Mountains, under agreement with the Department of Defense. The soldiers gained a sense of civil service in protecting those small, threatened communities.
