US Navy aims to halve submarine cost
Article Abstract:
The first phase of a major submarine research programme that could revolutionize the sector is due for completion in May 2006 as the US submarine-building industry prepares to settle into steady production as set out by the 2006 Quadrennial Defense Review. Known as Tango Bravo, this USD97 million-research programme began two years ago when the US Navy (USN) and the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) invited Northrop Grumman Newport News and general Dynamics Electric Boat to study ways of manufacturing submarines for half the unit cost of a Virginia-class boat, without compromising military capability.
