US focuses on central Sahara
Article Abstract:
The central Sahara region is a focal point for US security policy towards Africa as Washington tries to contain the activity of Algerian Salafi insurgent groups and deter extra-regional terrorists from seeking refuge in the area's vast ungoverned spaces. A Department of State-led program called the Pan-Sahel Initiative (PSI) designed to protect borders, track movement of people combat terrorism and enhance regional cooperation and stability began in late 2002.

Senegambia's trafficking hubs
Article Abstract:
A network of trafficking hubs has emerged along the coast of West Africa where the Atlantic drug-supply routes of Africa, Europe and South America converge. Legally established between Gambia and Senegal (Senegambia), these routes are used to transport locally produced cannabis, but the increased incidence of cocaine smuggling in these areas has given rise to concerns in intelligence circles about the use of this route for anti-Western terrorist activities.
