USA chases Chilean fighter contract
Article Abstract:
Lockheed Martin and Boeing have been permitted by the US Government to sell up to 48 aircraft to the Chilean Air Force (FACH). The FACH is looking to buy between 30 and 60 advanced fighter aircraft by 2000, with an outlay of $500 million to $600 million planned for the procurement of initial batches. The Chilean government, which has not yet decided in what aircraft to buy, are reportedly inclined to buy American-made planes due to its democratic status in the American hemisphere. Meanwhile, Chile is also expected to choose American planes because of its aim of enhancing economic and political ties with the US.

ChileEs plan to create a civilian security intelligence agency known as the Agencia Nacional de Intelogencia (ANI) is approved by the lower house of the Chilean parliament, the chamber of Deputies. The ANI would take over two areas of the Direccion de Seguridad Publica e Informaciones (DISPI) such as terrorism and organized transnational crime as well as would take responsibly for wide, increased domestic counterintelligence

Regional swing to left boosts Bolivia's territorial ambitions
Article Abstract:
The long-standing territorial dispute between Chile and Bolivia is hoped to be resolved as a result of the ideological affinities due to the virtually simultaneous election of left-wing governments in Chile and Bolivia. The prolonged talks regarding territorial exchanges has led to economic integration as a means of minimizing internal political tensions and national antagonisms.
