Up-armoring--The Russian approach
Article Abstract:
The former Soviet Union was among the few countries which developed heavily armored tanks such as the JS-3 as well as the T-34 which was one of the best protected medium tanks with perfect external shapes, and angled surfaces increasing the effective thickness of the armor plates and deflecting projectiles. None of these solutions found widespread use, even though the Soviets tested lightweight screens against shaped charges and both metallic and non-metallic applique armor.
