Article Abstract:
Japan is only one of America's alliances that are equally focused on three major threats that is the threat of Islamic terrorism, the proliferation of nuclear technology to rogue regimes and the rise of China. The United States-Japan alliance is one of the great strategic success stories of the Cold War era and, thus far, it looks as if it will continue.

What the Japanese military needs
Article Abstract:
The question whether Japan's own military services can operate in a joint way might seem to come first, as Japan's Self-Defense Forces prepare to respond to the challenges of operating in a combine way with the US forces. Japan's military will have to learn simultaneously how to conduct joint and combined operations, as there is no luxury of time.

The need for the Defense Department to create multiservice, 'stabilization and reconstruction' units, to focus on postwar operations is emphasized by the Pentagon strategists. The National Defense University in a study sponsored by retired Vice Adm. Arthur Cebrowski developed this proposal.
