$1-billion tobacco lawsuit thrown out

A New York district court has thrown out the federal government's landmark smuggling lawsuit against tobacco giant RJR-Macdonald. District Judge Thomas McAvoy claims the lawsuit contravenes a U.S. law that relieves U.S. courts from enforcing tax matters of other countries.

Smuggling meant gains for tobacco company

Montreal, Que.-based Imperial Tobacco Canada Ltd. was implicated in a cigarette smugling scheme. The scheme, which was spurred by a huge hike in tobacco taxes in Canada, was revealed in company documents.
