'1984' again: GlobalPC tries PC for the masses
Article Abstract:
MyTurn.com plans to begin selling a personal computer called GlobalPC in four cities. If its strategy is successful, it could change thinking about the way people use personal computers (PCs) and about Microsoft Corp's Windows hegemony. The user-friendly, $300 GlobalPC is inexpensive enough to appeal to households with annual incomes of $27,000. MyTurn.com believes that it will attract the 50% of US households that do not own a PC and families which do not desire to spend $1,000 on a second computer for the children.

Some analysts antsy about 'A Bug's Life'
Article Abstract:
Pixar, a computer animation services firm, is banking on the performance of its new computer-animated motion picture A Bug's Life at theaters for its financial survival in 1999. In fact, Pixar is expecting its profits and revenues for that year to be derived from its product. One of the possible setbacks for Pixar is that consumer demand for A Bug's Life may be dragged down by the popularity of the movie Antz earlier released by DreamWorks SKG which is also about computer-generated insect characters.

Soft ad sales sign off NBC Internet
Article Abstract:
NBC has announced that it will buy and close NBC Internet. The move will end the Peacock network's grand effort to use its airtime to build NBCi into a leading portal for high-speed services and a potentail rival to America Online, MSN and Yahoo. The demise of the San Francisco, CA-based service is blamed on soft online ad sales. NBC will regain $220 million worth of ad time it had committed to NBCi over the next 2-1/2 years.
