A European slump hits U.S. computer makers; the only likely arena for explosive high-tech growth is the Pacific Rim
Article Abstract:
American computer companies can no longer rely on active sales in Europe to compensate for slow growth in the United States. Analysts expect that 3rd qtr earnings figures will reflect slowed growth in Europe, where high interest rates and uncertainty about capital investments during Germany's reunification have caused economic conditions to deteriorate. Sales of mainframes are slow, and sales of mid-sized machines could show no gain for the year. Analysts say that weaknesses are even showing up in the microcomputer sector, which had been rapidly expanding. International Data, a multinational market research firm, projects strengthened demand in Pacific Rim countries during the next five years.

I.B.M. meets with 52,600, virtually
Article Abstract:
IBM held a gigantic company meeting for all of its 320,000 employees. The brainstorming company meeting was held on the Internet and was called WorldJam. The Web site itself is called WorldJam Coda. IBM spent millions of dollars and nine months preparing for the cyberspace company event. It remains to be seen how much actual 'knowledge-sharing' was accomplished during the three-day cyber-meeting. IBM will now begin the months-long process of assessing the meeting through interviews, surveys, data review and focus groups. It is the first time a company has been able to hold a meeting of this size in an unprecedented 'marriage of technology and management.'
