A Summer Uptick For the Airlines, But Then What?
Article Abstract:
Summer travel has boosted airline finances and stock prices. J.P. Morgan analyst Jamie Baker believes airlines will show a 2003 third-quarter profit. His recommendation for Northwest helped the airline's stock increase 27 cents yesterday to $10.64. Another Morgan Stanley analyst, William Greene, showed support for Southwest Airlines whose stock has increased 30% since the end of 2002. Yesterday's price went up 18 cents to $18 per share. There is still some lingering concern over the continuing decrease in business travel or the greater dependence on low-fare carriers for executive and employee trips. The major carriers need full-scale resumption of business travel to make a substantial recovery from losses impacted by Sept. 11 and Iraq war events.

The Dept. of Labor's Employee Benefits Security Administration office has approved Northwest Airlines' transfer of?securities from its regional subsidiary Pinnacle Airlines?to?Northwest's employee pension program. This exemption will cover a $1 billion shortfall. The Northwest pension fund has $4.4 billion in assets which cover 73,000 retired and current employees. There was some labor union opposition to this transaction for fear it would lead to hoarding of cash by smaller airlines.
