Dairy farms evolve to survive

Industry analysts said that the number of dairy farms has dropped 70% from 334,000 dairy farms in 1980 to 92,000 daity farms in 2002. But milk output per cow has increased from 12,072 pounds of milk per cow in 1980 to 18,858 pounds of milk per cow in 2002.

Natural gas prices rise 40%

Natural gas prices in the U.S. rose about 40% and heating oil costs increased by 50% on February 24, 2003, as compared to the previous year. Higher natural gas and heating oil prices would have the effect of increasing the already high home-heating bills.
