A balancing act: Republicans risk a voter backlash over budget cuts

The Republican-controlled Congress continues to advocate both the passage of a balanced budget amendment to the US constitution and tax cuts, but the party has thus far resisted calls to specify its intended budget cuts. Two very expensive Republican fund-raising dinners in early 1995 are described.

Article Abstract:
Seven Republicans have declared their candidacy for their party's 1996 nomination including Bob Dole, Phil Gramm, Pete Wilson and Pat Buchanan. Most of the candidates belong to the party's conservative wing. New Jersey Gov Christine Todd Whitman has been mentioned as a possible VP candidate.

Pres Clinton's popularity increased from 38% to 51%, during 1995, while House speaker Gingrich's popularity fell to 29%. The federal budget battle seems to have benefitted Clinton and hurt Gingrich. Controversial remarks made by Gingrich also damaged his standing in the polls.
