A toolbox for Apple's Powerbook
Article Abstract:
Symantec Corp's $129 Norton Essentials for Powerbook bundles together 12 utility programs for the Apple PowerBook notebook computer. All are useful, but few are truly essential. Norton Essentials includes three power-management utilities: Backlight Dimmer, which automatically dims and brightens the screen in response to use; Battery Gauge, which displays remaining battery life; and Battery Saver, which lets users set their own time delays for hard-disk, processor and system shutdown. The program also offers Instant Access for Appletalk, a utility that makes AppleTalk connections easy and eliminates power drain while disconnected. Syncit! automatically updates desktop Macintosh files with their newer PowerBook versions. It is powerful enough for individual users but not for network workgroups. Users with paranoid tendencies will appreciate Norton Essential's password-control utility, Power Guard.

Flexibility without complexity
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Corp offers two new Windows-based software packages geared toward novice users. Microsoft Money, $69.95, is called a 'smart checkbook,' and keeps records of checks, deposits, withdrawals, credit cards, business expenses and so on. Many users will find Microsoft Money to be the best choice until the rival product Quicken comes out in a Windows version. On the downside, Money does not let users pay bills electronically as does Quicken. Microsoft Publisher, $199.95, is a desktop publishing package that uses 'wizards,' which are smart software tools, to accomplish tasks such as designing and formatting a newsletter. Microsoft has made Microsoft Publisher especially easy for new users and makes it possible to create professional-looking documents without the frustration users may suffer with more advanced packages.
