AOL and Time Warner face criticism at F.C.C. hearing

At Federal Communications Commission hearings on the proposed merger of AOL and Time Warner focussed on open access. Both companies said their Internet and broadcast businesses carried competitors' content. The FCC officials seemed to favor letting the deal proceed. Opponents to the merger say the resulting company would control too big a part of the TV and Internet market. Like the Microsoft antitrust case, the ruling on this merger will try to balance consumer protection against allowing the marketplace determine how the technology evolves.

The Federal Communications Commission has approved the merger of Time Warner Inc. and America Online Inc. The merged entity will be called AOL Time Warner Inc. The FCC approval hinges on the condition that AOL's instant messaging service be rendered compatible with other Internet rival systems. The FCC wants to prevent AOL Time Warner dominance of instant messaging and other high-speed cable connection Internet services.

Agreement Reached to Sell Jerusalem Post
