High Court slams local carriers
Article Abstract:
The Supreme Court has voted 5 against 3 to reaffirm the Federal Communications Commission's right to fix the prices local phone firms can charge competitors for access to their networks. The ruling, written by Judge Antonin Scalia, was made to overturn a lower court's decision that favored local carriers on the issue of so-called "unbundling." MCI WorldCom and AT&T general counsel Jim Cicconi applauded the decision, which would largely benefit telecommunications customers.
