After 17 years, laptop pioneer finally goes for IPO

LapLink.com founder and CEO and Chmn Mark Eppley is planning to launch an initial public offering in 2001. The move comes 17 years after he founded the company which was geared towards supplying laptop computers with software in 1983. Eppley declares that he likes the idea of the discipline and focus enforced by outside shareholders and of handling the ups and downs of employees who hold stock and options.

The US technology industry seems to have stalled for lack of ideas. HTML, which is the basis for the Web, may have hit the upper limits of what it is capable of doing. In 2000, there was little new and almost nothing that got everybody excited. Napster, the Web music service that is in danger of getting shut down by the recording industry, became the edgiest topic of conversation for the year. However, the problems are expected to be temporary since the technology industry has an amazing power of regeneration.
