After space, Hughes battles Time; chasing cable foes to a Web future
Article Abstract:
Hughes Electronics has become the U.S.'s fourth largest cable pay-per-view provider. It has 8.1 mil subscribers to its direct broadcast satellite TV service, DirecTV. AT&T has 14.6 mil customers; Time Warner, 12.6 mil; and Comcast 8.2 mil. Hughes's closest satellite services competitor, EchoStar, has 3.4 mil. Hughes remains a GM subsidiary, but a 2002 spinoff is rumored. Besides its TV services, Hughes provides network and satellite data services to businesses. Total 1999 revenue was $8.2 bil.; 2000 is estimated to be $9.7 bil. The company is still not profitable as it spends to build market share at CATV expense and roll out wireless Internet services.

Iridium, bankrupt, is planning a fiery ending for its 88 satellites
Article Abstract:
Iridium L.L.C., once considered to be the pioneer in satellite communications, is bankrupt and facing the prospect of allowing its constellation of 88 low-earth orbit satellites to burn up in the Earth's upper atmosphere over the next two years. The company failed to capitalize on its projections of providing service to 1.6 million subscribers in 2000 and 27 million in 2007, with 55,000 subscribers and 12 years' lead time to market. Services are currently being shut down, though the Defense Department still uses the communications service, many employees have been let go and the company's CEO resigned in mid-March. Iridium hoped that cellular telephone pioneer Craig O. McCaw would follow through on his stated interest to buy the company, by McCaw acquired ICO Global Telecommunications instead.
