Alaska Airlines CEO annonces safety steps after workers complain

Alaska Airlines CEO John Kelly announced in Mar 20, 2000 that the company has taken initiatives to boost safety. These include an outside safety audit of all operational areas, a telephone communication line for employees to reports to his office directly about safety issues and the hiring of a vice president for safety who would report to him directly. The announcement followed a complaint by workers in Seattle, WA, about their maintenance-base manager regarding his actions which they claim compromised aircraft safety.

Boeing Co's decision to uproot its headquarteres from Seattle, WA, after 85 years reflects sweeping changes in the aerospace industry and the world economy in which Boeing must compete. The company is choosing its future headquarters from among Chicago, IL, Dallas-Forth Worth, TX, and Denver, CO. In choosing its headquarters, the company will look for a culturally diverse city that offers ready access to global markets, provides a strong pro-business environment and allows easy access to major Boein operations and customers.

Starbucks cafes branch into liquor, food

Starbucks, a specialty coffee retailer, intends to establish two European-style outlets in Seattle, WA, that will serve liquor and food in addition to lattes and capuccino. Foods that the new outlets will offer include salads, sandwiches, pastries, desserts and hot entries while beverages will include bottled beer, soft drinks, alcohol-enhanced coffee drinks, cocktails and wine by the glass. Starbucks' president of North American retail business, John Richards, said the cafes will target families of baby boomers and will pattern its style after Greenwhich Village coffee house.
