Article Abstract:

The family of former Indonesian president Suharto may have to account for as much as $US15 bil placed in Swiss and Austrian bank accounts. The Suharto family had connections to all aspects of the Indonesian government before Pres Suharto was forced to resign by the Indonesian democratic movement. Political opponents of Suharto are calling for investigations but many officials in the Habibie government, which succeeded Suharto, have ties to the overthrown president and may not wish to investigate him.

Magawati Sukarnoputri, leader of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, has faced gender discrimination and criticism from Muslims in her bid for the presidency. Although she is Muslim and popular with about 35% of the vote, the issue of gender has forced her to counter arguments that she could not effectively govern the Islamics because of their beliefs concerning women's roles.
