The triumph of Mike Rann's government in South Australia and Paul Lennon's administration in Tasmania underline the importance of the three constant threads in successful political campaigns, that is, the economy, party unity and incumbency. Voters are reluctant to change governments when they are content in their lives and are relatively confident their governments know what they are doing, and significantly, in these two state elections, the national economy appears to be the clear issue with federal implications.

Australian Prime Minister John Howard lost nothing substantial when he refused to support the controversial Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme sale, and in fact, managed to still the voices of discontent within his ministry and outside. However, New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma and Victoria's Labor Premier Steve Bracks lost out on millions of dollars from their states' holdings in the Snowy.
