Amazon deals wheels with online auto sales partnership

Amazon.com has launched an online automobile-buying service in a venture with startup Greenlight.com, which hopes to capitalize on Amazon's 23- million customer base. Amazon controls a 5% stake in Greenlight, with an option to increase this interest over a two-year period, where it will collect at least $15 million for its participation. Greenlight is operating in 27 states with 1,500 dealers. Jupiter Communications estimates that online car sales will account for one-third of all auto- buying transcations by 2004.

Ford, Firestone extend tire reimbursement program

Automaker Ford Motor Co and tire manufacturer Bridgestone/Firestone have extended a program to allow consumers to get new tires anywhere they can find them in connection to the recall of 6.5 million Firestone ATX, ATXII and Wilderness AT tires. Consumers who replace these recalled tires at places other than Firestone stores and authorized Firestone dealers or Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealers must pay for the tires, keep the old ones and receive reimbursement through an authorized dealer.

Automakers steer into Net banking

Automakers have begun to explore the Internet World Wide Web banking business. General Motors Acceptance Corp (GMAC) has acquired a savings bank and will use it to launch online banking services. GMAC Bank was launched in Jun 2000 and is initially operating as a one-office institution in Wilmingon, DE. It offers products such as checkbook, savings and certificate of deposit accounts. It also offer first and second mortgages from its subsidiary, GMAC Mortgage.
