Aging utility plants under fire
Article Abstract:
The Environmental Protection Agency was asked by environmental organizations to compel utilities to cut down the mercury emissions of their aging electric power plants. The plants release as much as 51 tons of mercury into the air each year according to the EPA. Mercury emissions come from the incinerated coal in coal-burning power plants. The mercury emissions are carried up to 600 miles away from the plant, polluting rivers, lakes and eventually finds its way into fish. The EPA has up to December to decide whether it should impose regulations on coal-fired plants.
