Movie theater operators are devising new strategies to increase revenue they need to recover from expansion spending and to keep up with the rapid changes in technology. Some owners are exploring whether moviegoers are willing to pay extra for special treatment that allows them to skip ticket lines, sit in leather recliners and eat classy foods. On Mar 24, 2000, General Cinema Corp will open its fourth luxurious theater in Framingham, MA, where audience will get such VIP treatments for $15 per ticket.

Video-on-demand comes of age

Intertainer's video-on-demand service will permit phone and cable companies to offer their clients their choice of movies, shows and programs on their personal computers or TVs. The three-year-old company, whose investors include Intel, Sony, Comcast, US West and NBC, is expected to compete with video rental stores and generate additional revenue from electronic commerce. Intertainer's technology, which requires a digital set-top decoder box, allows users to pause and rewind a chosen film at will.

Satellite TV to bring local stations home

Satellite television broadcasters may be able to compete better when President Clinton approves a law that will allow then to transmit local channel broadcasting. With the adoption of the new law, DirecTV and Echostar intends to offer the local ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC stations as well as a PBS broadcast. The local broadcasts will cost DirecTV subscribers an additional $5.99 every month, while Echostar will charge $4.99 more for the service.
