Auto thefts decline, but thieves target pickups

The theft of automobiles in 1999 dropped by 14.5% compared to the levels reported in 1998, according to data gathered by CCC Information Services. However, an alarming trend is that the number of pickups that were stolen in 1999 jumped by 52% compared to the numbers reported in the previous year. The list of the 25 most stolen vehicles in 1999 include two pickups, the Ford F-150 at No. 5 and the 1994 Chevrolet C1500 4x2 pickup at No. 11.

Daewoo No. 4 in customer service

Daewoo Motor America, despite being in the US car market for only slightly more than a year, is already ranked as the No. 4 carmaker in terms of customer service. The company, which is only behind perennial topnotchers Lexus, Saturn and BMW, was able to ourperform such automakers as Mercedes- Benz, Jaguar and Cadillac. Daewoo's surprise performance comes as the company is going through a reorganization.

GM zeroes in on Daewoo deal

General Motors Corp has disclosed that it has formally begun negotiations with creditors of bankrupt Daewoo Motor Co to buy the South Korean automaker. The announcement of the formal purchase negotiations was made on May 25, 2001. But several issues remained unsolved, including the price for Daewoo, the fate of several plants and an unhappy and sometimes violent workforce.
