Chairman Anthony Comper has announced that Bank of Montreal is reviewing all of its operations with an eye to shifting business to the most profitable areas. The bank has identifies 30 business lines which are being measured on their contribution to the bottom line. Any business generating less than a 15% return on equity will be considered a laggard.

Scotiabank sells problem loan into U.S. debt markets

Knoxville, Tenn.-based Regal Cinemas Inc., which is a chain of motion picture theaters, has acquired a $100 million problem loan into the United States distressed debt markets from Bank of Nova Scotia. Scotiabank, which received 90 cents on the dollar for the deal, is Canada's fourth-largest bank.
