Issue for Bush: How to Speak Of Casualties?
Article Abstract:
The Bush administration is attempting to deal with the political consequences of US soldiers getting killed every day in Iraq. The downing of a Chinook helicopter that killed 15 men and women posed a new challenge for the president. To be consistent, he did not meet with the press and let Sec. of Defense Rumsfeld handle media inquiries. The White House strategy is to show a president as commander-in-chief deal ing with the bigger problem of transforming Iraq, but a president who is touched by anyone who sacrifices his or her life to fight terrorism. Bush aides want to prevent press emphasis on daily body counts of American soldiers.

BUSH ASKS LANDS IN MIDEAST TO TRY DEMOCRATIC WAYS
Article Abstract:
Pres. Bush used his speech to the National Endowment for Democracy Thursday to encourage Egypt, Syria, Iran, and Saudi Arabia to adopt democracy as a more productive and peaceful way to stabilize a country. The speech was part of an administration effort to reinforce US efforts in Iraq and gain more international acceptance of the US occupation that is complicated by daily terrorist attacks. Bush faces resistance in Arab countries because of US support for Israel, failure to provide justice for the suspected terrorists held at Guantanamo Bay and American support for non-democratic Arab regimes.
