FEAR OF SABOTAGE BY MISTRANSLATION AT GUANTANAMO
Article Abstract:
The U.S. Dept. of Defense is conducting a widescale investigation into a possible sabotage conspiracy among members of its 70 linguists. Officials are reviewing tapes of interrogations of the 680 Al Qaeda and Taliban prisoners detained at Guantanamo Bay for deliberate incorrect translation of both questions posed by interrogators and answers given by prisoners. The Pentagon is keeping the investigation close to the vest because it involves law enforcement, intelligence agencies and the military and has not yet offered a possible reason for the espionage and sabotage conspiracy. It is suspected that terrorists are trying to gain information on camp operations, those incarcerated and what was disclosed in interrogations, in order to disrupt camp operations and maintain damage control for their operations. Ahmad I. al-Halabi's case is the most serious so far. Halabi is accused of espionage and trying to pass information to Syria. He was a U.S. Air Force interpreter.
