Bank mergers get 'yellow light.'
Article Abstract:
A federal task force has recommended a fundamental reorganization of Canada's financial-services sector by eliminating the separation of banking, insurance and car leasing. The task force also suggests allowing other players into the banking industry and proposes to the government to make regulations that would safeguard consumers and compel banks to make public their contribution to communities and their small-business lending policies. The task force, however, said that it neither gave approval nor disapproval to mergers of financial institutions, but recommended that each transaction be evaluated on its own merit and balanced with issues on employment, competition, consumers and international competitiveness.
