Bank of Montreal sells 13 B.C. branches
Article Abstract:
Bank of Montreal is selling 13 small-town branches in British Columbia to local credit unions. The deal follows similar transactions earlier this year in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and is part of the bank's plan to reduce the number of branches by 200 over the next two years. Representatives from the bank and Credit Union Central of British Columbia, which is coordinating the purchase for 11 member credit unions, said the deal is good for customers and the 67 affected employees, all of whom will be offered jobs by the credit unions. The bank will receive $10-million before tax for the branches, which together administer about $560-million in deposits and loans. The bank now operates 993 branches across Canada, including 130 in British Columbia. The province has 74 credit unions with about 1.4 million members and $22-billion in assets. The deal does not include some products and services, such as mutual funds and MasterCard credit card accounts. Bank representatives said they were happy to find a solution that kept their employees working and that maintained service to their customers.
