Barclays made other bid for Hollinger

Britain's Barclay brothers who are trying to buy Conrad Black's holding company Hollinger Inc. made a $1.09 billion proposal to buy the minority shareholders of operating subsidiary Hollinger International Inc. The Press Holdings International Ltd. (PHI) would consider offering to acquire all Hollinger International class A common stock, other than that held by Hollinger Inc. for $18 a share.

Thomson sells 38 U.S. daily papers

Toronto, Ont.-based Thomson Corp. has sold 38 daily newspapers in the United States to Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. and Gannett Company Inc. in separate deals. The sale, which was valued at $1.58 billion, will be followed by the sale of 11 more U.S. newspapers and 5 Canadian newspapers.
