Kim Beazley's improved look helped when delivering the Labor Party's message. He was authoritative and more articulate than during previous speeches throughout the federal election campaign in 1998. The key issue in the debate was tax reform and economic management. John Howard was honest but Beazley asserted he did not believe in telling lies.
