The computer virus called Melissa was a fast-spreading virus that, after it had infected a computer, would search for e-mail addresses in the computer's files and spread itself to 50 new computers. Some companies' servers were overloaded by the volume of Melissa e-mails entering their system. A New Jersey computer programmer was arrested for starting the virus and faces up to 40 years in jail and $480,000 in fines.
