Australia's Labor party leader, Kim Beazley, has dumped his predecessor, Mark Latham's controversial policy of a private school hit list, and has guaranteed at a National Press Club appearance that no school would have its funding cut. Despite the bagging he received from some quarters, the Labor leader's calculated use of the Beaconsfield mine collapse in the context of the debate over industrial relations (IRs) was also smart politics.

Australian Prime Minister John Howard is accomplishing most of what he set out to achieve in politics, from tax reform and the complete privatization of Telstra to industrial relations reform in 2005. Many in the party believe if Howard's new industrial relations laws get through parliament he will see the achievement as an appropriate point at which to depart the political scene.

Mark Lathman, shadow treasurer, is a passionate believer in the direct taxation of expenditure, specifically, a progressive expenditure tax (PET). Under PET, a taxpayer is required to provide evidence of their savings to the tax office, and PET taxes income minus any net additions to savings.
