Bring on the 'Cavalcade': the Shaw Festival revives a pageant

Shaw's artistic director Christopher Newton has undertaken the challenge of staging 'Cavalcade,' which has only been performed twice since 1931. The festival is $800,000 in debt, and Newton will keep 'Cavalcade' in repertory so it will be easily brought back for future seasons.

The Festival Theatre has been remodeled for 1997 Stratford Festival in Ontario. Artistic director Richard Monette has revitalized the 40-year-old drama festival and helped it to turn a small profit. The 1997 season includes productions of 'Camelot' and 'Taming of the Shrew.'
