British Airways-Airbus deal burns Boeing 717
Article Abstract:
Boeing Co's hopes for its new 717 model were dealt another blow when British Airways (BA) PLC ordered a minimum of 12 A318 aircraft from Airbus Industrie in a $471 million deal. The 717 and A318 are both designed for short routes. BA called the deal the final step in its fleet strategy, which means that Boeing will most likely not get another chance at a BA order for small jets. Boeing is lagging far behind Airbus in the race for new orders of the smaller jets, having sold only 154 717s compared to Airbus' 343 firm orders for its A318.
