Budget confusion

Australia's Treasurer Peter Costello will deliver budget numbers in May, 1999, based on projections of which government policies will be implemented. The General Services Tax is not due to start until July, 2000, but it has a significant impact on the 1999 budget. The government has not ruled on the sale of the telecommunications company Telstra, which would affect revenue numbers in the budget.

Making Australia a republic is not possible without designing an efficient model for direct election. Opposition leader Kim Beazley may support such a model, but he will need to work with Employment Minister Peter Reith on such a proposal and that is unlikely.
