Canada's $7.6 billion beef cattle industry was rocked by news of the country's first case of mad cow disease, bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The case, which was discovered in livestock in Alberta, has undermined beef prices.

Up to nine cattle farms have been quarantined in Canada as a result of the mad-cow disease. Officials are searching for the origins of a single mad-cow case. Additional farms are expected to be quarantined in the near future.
