Shirt makers press into exports
Article Abstract:
Canada's men's and boy's clothing sector is beginning to export its way out of an industry slump. The export strategy also appears to be one way the sector is countering an import penetration that is probably the highest among all apparel sectors. Shirt imports from the US, for instance, have more than tripled in eight years. Statistics Canada and Industry Canada report that there were 81 manufacturers in the sector in 1997, employing 8,956 people and generating C$775.8 million in revenue.
