CHUM Ltd., the Toronto broadcaster that is dreaming of becoming the third national force in private television, would be aggressively bidding in any auction for Craig Media Inc. The purchase of Craig Media would give CHUM an assured position in key Western Canadian markets, and would be a big step in its rise to national network status.

CHUM Ltd's $265-million deal to buy Craig Media Inc. would position it as Canada's third major private television broadcaster. On acquisition of Craig Media, CHUM would get conventional television stations in Brandon, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Calgary along with three specialty channels such as MTV, MTV2 and TV Land.
